    The East Coast travel guide

    Overview

Located just two and a half hours from the UK by plane and blessed with stunning beaches, Tunisia is a favourite alternative to the northern Mediterranean coast and islands among European sun-seekers. The mysterious and magical Sahara Desert, intriguing cuisine, historical sites and modern infrastructure add to the country's appeal, making it a well-rounded summer destination.

Tunisia's riviera extends for about 800 miles (1,287km) south of the capital, Tunis, and boasts an abundance of luxury resort towns, the most notable of which are Hammamet, Port El Kantaoui, Sousse and Monastir (Skanes). The strip is bursting with attractive hotels and apartment blocks, and is fast becoming known as one of the best value destinations in the Mediterranean.

Summers are short, hot, muggy and clear, while winters are long, cool, windy and mostly clear. The best months for a visit are April, May and November, when travellers are most likely to experience good weather with pleasant average temperatures between 68F (20C) and 77F (25C).
