Before you travel

A little preparation can make a big difference when travelling as a family.
  • Check your airline’s rules for buggies, car seats and baby bags
  • Consider pre-booking parking to help plan your arrival and reduce on-the-day decisions
  • Keep passports and boarding passes together and easy to reach
  • Allow a little extra time for check-in, security and boarding
  • Decide what you’ll carry in hand baggage, especially food and medication
  • Download the Heathrow app for terminal maps, live flight updates and directions on the day

Plan your travel

Explore your options

Heathrow is one of the best-connected airports in the UK, with a wide range of transport options to suit different families, budgets and travel plans.

Whether you’re driving, taking the train or using public transport, you’ll find step-free access, clear signage and regular services to all terminals.

Heathrow is served by:

🚆 Train services, including Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line
🚇 London Underground services to multiple terminals
🚍 Local buses and national coach services, connecting Heathrow with towns and cities across the UK
🚖 Taxis and private hire, with drop-off points outside every terminal

This range of options makes it easier to choose the route that works best for your family, whether you’re travelling light, managing buggies or keeping cost in mind.

Driving and parking

If you’re driving to Heathrow, there are several options to make your arrival with children easier.

  • Parent and child parking bays are available in Park & Ride and Terminal Parking car parks with wider bays, clearly marked and closer to lifts and transport links, which can make unloading children and luggage easier.
  • Meet & Greet parking can take the stress out of arrival and return. With Meet & Greet, you drive to a dedicated drop-off area in the terminal parking car park and hand your car keys to a trained team member, who parks it for you in a secure on-airport location. On your return, your car will be waiting in the designated pick-up area close to the terminal.
  • Valet Parking works in a similar way to Meet & Greet Parking, but allows you to drop off right at the terminal forecourt. On return, your car is brought back near the terminal, which can make getting home easier when travelling with luggage, buggies and tired children.
  • Terminal 5 Pod Parking offers a short, driverless pod journey from the car park to the terminal. Pods run on demand and take just a few minutes — as well as convenience, it’s a fun novelty for children and a relaxed start to the journey.

Free luggage trolleys are available in car parks and terminal forecourts.

Heathrow Express

Travelling by train can be a simple and predictable option for families.

  • Children aged 15 and under travel free on Heathrow Express when accompanied by a paying adult
  • Trains are step-free, with space for luggage and buggies
  • Heathrow Express runs frequently and connects the airport with London Paddington in around 15 minutes

This can be a good option if you want a straightforward journey into the terminal with minimal walking and no parking to think about.

Arriving at the airport

What to expect when you arrive

Airports take longer to move around with children, especially with buggies or younger travellers. Allowing extra time can help everyone feel more relaxed.

Across the terminals, you’ll find:

  • Free luggage trolleys
  • Seating throughout departures and arrivals
  • Charging points for phones and tablets
  • Heathrow colleagues in purple uniforms if you need help

How to prepare and what to expect at security

Before you reach the checkpoint

Security can feel daunting with babies or tired children, but knowing what to expect can help.

  • Fold pushchairs as you approach security
  • Have baby food, milk or medication ready if needed

Security colleagues are there to help and can guide you through each step.

Security rules around liquids have changed recently, so here’s the up-to-date situation for passengers flying from Heathrow.

  • You can take enough baby food, prepared baby milk, sterilised water and expressed breast milk for your journey in your hand luggage - these items are treated as exempt from the usual liquid limits at UK airports.
  • Expressed breast milk must be in liquid form, not frozen, and in containers that are no larger than 2 litres each
  • These items don’t have to fit into a separate liquids bag and can stay in your hand luggage for security screening.
  • Security officers may still need to screen or open the containers to check what’s inside or ask about them.

One thing to note:
Heathrow has rolled out new advanced scanners that mean most liquids (including baby milk and food) can stay in your bag at security, but if you’re connecting at another airport or returning through a country that still enforces the old 100ml rule, you may need to follow that airport’s rules too.

Medication
  • Keep medication accessible
  • Bring supporting documentation where possible
  • Powder and solid medicines can stay in your bag
Pushchairs and equipment

Pushchairs, car seats and baby carriers go through security screening.

  • Pushchairs usually need to be folded before scanning.
    • Pushchairs after security
Most airlines allow pushchairs to be used in the terminal and taken to the gate. They’re usually placed in the aircraft hold at boarding and returned either at the aircraft door or at baggage reclaim, depending on the airline – always a good idea to check with your airline before travelling.
  • Children who can walk unaided may go through the scanner on their own
  • Children who cannot walk unaided will be carried through with you
Tips to make security easier
  • Allow a little extra time, especially during busy periods
  • Pack simply, keeping essentials easy to reach
  • Explain the process to children before you arrive - it can help reduce nerves
  • Ask for help if you need more time or space
Fast Track security

Some families choose to use Fast Track security, which gives access to a dedicated security lane. This is an optional service and can be helpful if you’re:

  • Travelling with young children or a baby
  • Managing pushchairs and multiple bags
  • Flying at a particularly busy time

Fast Track must be booked in advance, and availability varies by terminal and time of day. All standard security rules still apply.

Free Stay & Play zones for younger children

Soft play spaces in every terminal

Located in each terminal after security, these play areas are designed to help younger children burn off some energy before boarding. They include soft play and age-appropriate zones, with seating nearby for parents and carers. Stay & Play areas are unsupervised; children must be accompanied at all times.

Stay & Play locations

Opening times are 06:00 – 21:00 daily

You can also keep younger travellers entertained with Heathrow’s Mr Men online games, which are free to play on your phone or tablet and designed to pass the time while you wait to board.

A wide choice of family-friendly places to eat

Easy dining options for families

Across the terminals you’ll find restaurants and cafés that cater well for families, with children’s menus, highchairs and space for buggies. Many places offer familiar favourites alongside lighter options, making it easier to find something that suits everyone.

During school holidays, Kids Eat Free offers are available at selected restaurants when an adult buys a main meal - a handy way to keep costs down while you refuel before the flight.

Baby changing and feeding facilities

Family toilets and feeding rooms

If you’re travelling with a baby or toddler, you’ll find practical facilities across the airport to help you manage those pre-flight moments with less stress.

  • Baby changing areas are available in every terminal, both before and after security.

  • Most are located alongside the main toilet blocks, making them easy to find as you move through the terminal.

  • Family toilets and larger washrooms are available in selected locations, giving you more space if you’re travelling with a buggy or hand luggage.

  • In some areas, you’ll also find seating or quieter spaces suitable for feeding, depending on the terminal.

Look out for the baby-care symbol on terminal signage, or check the terminal maps to find the nearest facilities during your journey.

A wide selection of shops

Pick up games and plane friendly distractions

You’ll also find a wide range of shops selling books, games, toys and travel-friendly activities. Many parents choose to save a small treat for the airport - something new to enjoy on the plane or during the journey ahead.

Plane spotting

Watch the planes before you board

If you’re looking for a calmer moment, there are quieter seating areas across the terminals, useful for reading, drawing, or simply taking a breather before boarding.

You’ll also find plenty of spots with great views of the planes, a simple way to keep children entertained while you wait. Watching aircraft taxi, park, take off, and land is a favourite with younger travellers and plane-spotting teens alike.

If you’ve got some time before boarding, head for the large windows near the gates. Every terminal has good viewing spots, and in Terminal 4, there’s a dedicated viewing area after security with wide views across the airfield.

Terminal 5’s satellite gates are also a good option if you’re flying from there. It’s an easy, low-effort way to pass the time, with no screens or planning needed.

A few helpful pointers for your arrival at Heathrow

When you arrive at Heathrow, families follow the same route as other passengers through the terminal: passport control, baggage reclaim, customs, and then the arrivals hall.

  • Children aged 10 and over may be eligible to use eGates if they meet the requirements

  • Families travelling with younger children will need to use staffed passport control desks

  • Free luggage trolleys are available in baggage reclaim, and colleagues are on hand if you need help

Some passengers also choose Fast Track Arrivals, which offers access to a dedicated passport control lane at selected terminals. This is an optional service and must be booked in advance. Availability varies by terminal and time of day.
