Piccadilly line industrial action: 2-4 June

Due to planned industrial action, there will be no Piccadilly line London Underground service to or from Heathrow on Tuesday 2 June and Thursday 4 June. A normal service is expected on Wednesday 3 June.

Heathrow Express, Elizabeth line, replacement buses and local bus services will run as normal on these days.

Please plan your journey before travelling to Heathrow and allow extra time where necessary, as these services will be busier than usual.

This year marks a major milestone for UK aviation. In 2026, Heathrow is celebrating 80 years since we welcomed our first passengers on 25 March 1946 – the start of our journey to become the world’s most connected airport.

Celebrate with us

To mark our big birthday, we have lots of fun activities and events at the airport for you to enjoy.

Heathrow Sounds

Celebrate our 80th in style, with some exciting live musical performances that span the decades. Look out for our musicians performing in terminals every Friday throughout June, July and August.

A poem visible only from the skies

Bestselling poet David Larbi has penned a lyrical tribute to Heathrow, that will be visible only to passengers flying in and out of Heathrow. Look out of your window during take off and landing to spot the poem etched in giant letters into a nearby field.

Experience Heathrow through the ages

Pop on a pair of virtual reality goggles to take a journey back in time, and experience what Heathrow would have been like back in the day. Look out for our pop-up sites in each terminal.

London Airport, as it was then known, opened to passengers in 1946. The first commercial flight to take off was a converted Lancaster bomber called Starlight that flew from London to Buenos Aires.

At the time, the passenger terminals were repurposed RAF military marquees along the Bath Road, fitted out with floral armchairs and wooden boards to protect passengers' shoes from the muddy airfield.

Looking to the future

In 2026, as we celebrate our 80th birthday, work begins on the planning application for a third runway at Heathrow. Fully funded by private investment, expansion will deliver more flights and more airlines at Heathrow - meaning greater choice and lower fares for holidaymakers.
