We’ve offset emissions to be carbon neutral for the energy used in our terminals and we’re committed to eliminating emissions completely by 2050.
We source 100% renewable electricity - enough to power everything in our terminals from lightbulbs to escalators. We achieve this by asking our electricity supplier to buy enough electricity from 100% renewable sources to meet the demand for Heathrow’s terminals.
We’re on a journey of sustainable growth. Since 1990 we’ve almost doubled the number of passengers who travel with us from 43 million to 80 million per year, while also making a 93% reduction in carbon emissions from the energy used by our terminals and fixed infrastructure.
We’ve installed over 100 charging points at the airport, with 101 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles already in our fleet.
We must also work to reduce the carbon impacts of journeys to and from the airport. We have various Initiatives to reduce the reliance on cars to access the airport, including implementing an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone and increasing the availability of public transport.
As the UK’s hub airport we can use our scale and influence to help accelerate change across the economy. A big opportunity to cut carbon emissions is through applying best practice in construction.
Our plan for sustainable growth, Heathrow 2.0, sets out how we will improve life for colleagues and communities, contribute to a thriving economy and help to tackle global challenges such as climate change.
