We are making great strides at Heathrow to ensure that cycling or walking to and from work is not only really easy and safe, but also desirable and rewarding. From our dedicated Cycle Hub and Cycling Partnership, to our Cycle Champions and training schemes, Heathrow's ambition is to make you feel sufficiently supported to get from door to desk on a bike or on foot and feel the benefits of having a reliable journey time and some exercise on your way to work.
Cycling and walking are practical solutions to beating the traffic. Spend less time hunting for car park spaces, and more time getting to where you need to go. Cycling provides freedom and convenience which makes it as fast, or faster than driving for many commutes.
Pedal power & walking is free. Incorporating cycling or walking into your commute can significantly reduce your monthly & yearly transport costs, especially with your discounted Heathrow Cycle Hub services which help take the cost out of buying & maintaining your bike.
The benefits associated with swapping driving for cycling or walking are endless. Daily exercise can be transformative for physical & mental health. Low-impact yet stimulating, it's an easy way to add exercise to your day, helping you to stay fit & mentally sharp.
"I've transitioned from a diehard driver to a regular cyclist and car-share advocate! My commute now forms part of my daily dose of exercise and I have total peace of mind that I can get home in time to do the school run!"

The Heathrow Cycling Partnership (HCP) represents the cyclists, and future cyclists, of Heathrow, and works closely with the airport to improve the cycling experience. We are your point of contact for any cycling-related queries, and provide a number of services to help support Heathrow’s cycling community. HCP works in partnership with Sustrans, the national walking and cycling charity, to further support the ambition of encouraging more employees to cycle to work and make their commute active!
Meet our HCP Project Officer, Dragos Hrituleac, who is dedicated to improving the cycling experience of all Heathrow colleagues.
The HCP heads a number of cycling initiatives, training schemes and dedicated cycling events.
Since the inception of the Heathrow Cycling Partnership, thousands of colleagues have been engaged in the following events:
Our cycle champions are central to the Heathrow cycling community and act as ambassadors for active travel. Champion duties include relaying messages from the Colleague Travel team and HCP, giving feedback and forwarding on any issues identified, as well as occasionally supporting during events which take place throughout the year. Our cycle champions also receive training and ad-hoc support for their work. They truly keep the pedals turning at Heathrow, representing the community and helping Heathrow become a great cycling airport! Anyone can be a cycling champion. Inspired? Get in touch to find out more.

There are several apps and online tools which are are great for tracking and planning your cycle journey.
Cycle Streets is a great journey planner. Simply tell it where you're cycling from and to, and let it show you the best way. It also lets you know how much CO2 you've saved.
Heathrow has its own dedicated Strava group, for those who cycle to, from and around Heathrow. Ideal for organising group rides, or enjoying a bit of friendly competition. Click here to join.
The following are also worth trying out - all are available via the App Store:
20,000 Heathrow colleagues across the airport live within 3 miles of the airport making walking a potential opportunity for a reliable, healthy and cost-effective commute. Many of us also live within walking distance of a bus, tube or rail station, which means incorporating a short walk into your daily commute could be very easy to do.
Starting and ending your day with a short walk can provide great benefits physically and mentally. Wake your body up for the day, or decompress after work, and feel the health benefits of walking regularly.
In fact, regular walking can be pretty transformative. A recent London School of Economics study shows that walking regularly is the best thing you can do to maintain a healthy weight. Participants who walked briskly for 30 minutes a day were found to have a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) than those who didn't.
Believe it or not, our most recent survey data shows that around 2,400 Heathrow colleagues live within a reasonable 2 km walking distance from the airport - around a half-hour walk!
It's cheap, it's good for the environment and it's certainly good for you. Why not see whether you could be walking to your closest station, bus stop, or even the airport itself?
Do you ride a motorcycle to work? Heathrow has a dedicated motorcycling group which is committed to supporting colleagues who travel to and from Heathrow by motorcycle, and ensuring Heathrow is constantly improving to cater for your specific needs.
In partnership with Bikesafe, Heathrow motorcyclists can get access to training sessions offering insight and guidance on how to become a safer and more confident rider.
Bikesafe is run by a dedicated team of biking experts who work with the biking community across the UK to reduce the amount of bike-related casualties and improve bikers' awareness of safe riding. https://bikesafe.co.uk/
Scooter users can also benefit from training through Bikesafe's specific Scootersafe courses, which offer scooter-focused training and workshops. A scooter can be a very different beast to a sports motorcycle, so don't miss out if you have a lighter bike or moped. Also, if you're yet to take your riding test, you may be eligible for additional training following your CBT. https://www.bikesafe-london.co.uk/courses/scootersafe-london.html
For those eligible, Heathrow may offer the option of a company motorcycle instead of a company car. However, as it will be used for work purposes, there is a heavy focus on risk assessment including: rider fitness, rider competence, and the sustainability of the motorcycle. Speak to your HR administrator to register your interest or request further information.
Heathrow Motorcycling Group also organises ride-outs, and motorcycle trips for keen bikers. Watch this space for an upcoming motorcycling calendar, and more information on how to get involved.
We have a Heathrow Rider Forum, which is a collaborative space for Heathrow colleagues to share views, participate in discussions and benefit from important information regarding issues related to motorcycling to and around Heathrow.
Motorcyclists can park free of charge in any of our motorcycle-dedicated parking bays, which are located across the campus. However, any bikes parked in locations other than in the designated bays will be removed! Please always remember to lock your motorcycle securely.
