Rail disruption - 4 & 8 October 2023

Due to planned industrial action and engineering works, there will be disruption to rail and London Underground services between Heathrow and Central London on Wednesday 4 and Sunday 8 October 2023.

Over this period, there will be disruption to Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line services

Please note, the London Underground (Tube) strikes that would have affected the Piccadilly line on Wednesday 4 and Friday 6 October 2023 have now been suspended, and the Piccadilly line will be running as normal throughout this period.

Passengers should plan their journeys before travelling, and allow for additional time where necessary as services will be busier than normal.

ULEZ expansion - 29 August 2023

London's Ultra Low Emission Zone, or ULEZ, is expanding to encompass all of Greater London, including Heathrow Airport, from the 29 August 2023.

The initiative, implemented by Transport for London (TfL), is aimed at reducing air pollution in London, therefore all vehicles entering the airport must meet certain emissions standards in order to avoid paying a daily charge.

The daily charge for non-compliant vehicles is £12.50 for most vehicles, including cars, vans, and motorcycles.

The charge will be in addition to any other fees or charges associated with entering the airport. The charge only applies when a vehicle is driven within the ULEZ zone, and does not apply to stationary vehicles including when cars are parked at Heathrow.

Please note, if you have booked Meet & Greet or Valet Parking with a non-compliant vehicle, and have selected a different exit terminal to your entry terminal, you will be liable for payment of a ULEZ charge to transfer your vehicle to another terminal.

Our pedal potential

We are making great strides at Heathrow to ensure that cycling or walking to and from work is not only really easy and safe, but also desirable and rewarding. From our dedicated Cycle Hub and Cycling Partnership, to our Cycle Champions and training schemes, Heathrow's ambition is to make you feel sufficiently supported to get from door to desk on a bike or on foot and feel the benefits of having a reliable journey time and some exercise on your way to work.

Travelling to the Central Terminal Area (CTA)

Due to the current closure of the tunnel side bores, cycling to the CTA is not possible. However, there are some free alternatives:

  • Park at PEx colleague car park (Eastern Perimeter Road) where secure cycle lockers have been installed in the south west quadrant (please access via the pedestrian/cycle gate by the roundabout). Free buses take colleagues to terminals 2 and 3 every six minutes at peak times (04:00 - 07:00, 12:30 - 15:00, 20:30 - 23:00). Outside of these times there is a bus every 10 minutes. Cycle parking is provided in the form of individual lockers. You will need your own padlock to make the locker secure. Padlocks should not be used when there are no bikes inside.

  • Park your bike at Terminal 5 and use the inter-terminal trains (all free) between approx 05:15 and midnight. The Piccadilly Line operates up to every 10 minutes and the Heathrow Express operates every 15 minutes. Elizabeth line also operates in the evenings and at weekends, every 30 minutes.

  • If you have a folding bike you can take it with you on any of the trains mentioned above.

  • Non-folding bikes can be taken on Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line services outside of peak hours.

We will be providing direct cycle access in to the CTA when the construction work on the main tunnel is complete. We expect to open that access in the first quarter of 2024.

There are several apps and online tools which are are great for tracking and planning your cycle journey. CycleStreets is a great journey planner. Simply tell it where you're cycling from and to, select what kind of route you would like and let it show you the best way. It also lets you know how much CO2 you've saved. Hint: you can change the base map used on CycleStreets to one you’re most familiar with.

Other apps that are popular for route planning are:

  • Google Maps: Find a cycling route on a familar platform. Hint: sitch on the Cycling option in the Map Details section to see routes in your chosen area; select Cycling as your mode of transport when you enter your departure and destination points.
  • You can easliy find other riders' saved routes and follow them on Ride with GPS, plus record and share your own.
  • Bike Map is very similar to Ride with GPS.

Heathrow has its own dedicated Strava group, for those who cycle to, from and around Heathrow. Ideal for organising group rides, or enjoying a bit of friendly competition.

The following are also worth trying out - all are available via the App Store:

20,000 Heathrow colleagues across the airport live within 3 miles of the airport making walking a potential opportunity for a reliable, healthy and cost-effective commute. Many of us also live within walking distance of a bus, tube or rail station, which means incorporating a short walk into your daily commute could be very easy to do.

Starting and ending your day with a short walk can provide great benefits physically and mentally. Wake your body up for the day, or decompress after work, and feel the health benefits of walking regularly.

In fact, regular walking can be pretty transformative. A recent London School of Economics study shows that walking regularly is the best thing you can do to maintain a healthy weight. Participants who walked briskly for 30 minutes a day were found to have a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) than those who didn't.

Believe it or not, our most recent survey data shows that around 2,400 Heathrow colleagues live within a reasonable 2 km walking distance from the airport - around a half-hour walk!

It's cheap, it's good for the environment and it's certainly good for you. Why not see whether you could be walking to your closest station, bus stop, or even the airport itself?
