The Airports Commission explained

Background

In September 2012 the Airports Commission was set up by the Government to examine the need for additional UK airport capacity and to make recommendations on how this could be met in the short, medium and long term. In July 2013 we submitted our proposals for a new runway at Heathrow airport.

After a north-west third runway proposal was shortlisted in The Commissions December 2013 interim report, Heathrow consulted with stakeholders across the UK to improve it. In line with The Commission process, we submitted a revised plan in May for a north-west third runway which addressed the issues raised during our consultation.

On 25 October 2016, the Government confirmed that Heathrow is its preferred option for expansion of airport capacity in the South East.
