Solutions to remove carbon from the atmosphere are an important part of aviation’s transition to net zero. At Heathrow, we have been investing in and developing schemes to do just this, including our continued involvement in peatland restoration and woodland creation in the UK.
The UK is an island nation and flight connects its people and products to the world. However, the way we are flying is damaging. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is in use today with existing aircraft and airport infrastructure and it cuts carbon by around 70%.
To complement sustainable aviation fuels, from the 2030s it is anticipated that zero carbon aircraft will start to enter into airline fleets, particularly for short-haul travel. Heathrow is already researching the infrastructure that will be required to support these aircraft when they arrive.
We are a member of the industry coalition Sustainable Aviation, Airports Council International in Europe and are founding members of the World Economic Forum ‘Clean Skies for Tomorrow’ Coalition. Through these and other partnerships. We will continue to play our part in getting our sector to net zero emissions by 2050.
