The Tell Me EP, Andrea Black's debut release on Nub Music, has been shaped by her colourful musical career, highlights of which have included living and improvising with mentor John Lee Hooker and success with easy listening electronica as part of Slipper.
The EP showcases her talent in writing and performing beautiful accoustic songs brimming with character and insight. Her vocal and songwriting style has been compared to Kate Bush, Astrud Gilberto, Sade and Cheryl Crowe, and although you can hear facets of them all flitting between the songs, the music and vocal performance is pure Andrea Black.
Born in Sherwood, Nottingham, Andrea began to learn guitar aged 11, after receiving one as a gift from her grandfather. After recording a debut album and enjoying success in Japan, she met John Lee Hooker through a cousin and in 1997 took up an invitation to visit him in San Francisco. She found herself opening for Eric Burdon at a festival and living for some time as a guest at Hooker's house.
Subsequent collaborators have included Robert Logan (as the Black Loganberries) and Loop Guru's Sam Dodson.
Well-crafted songs with well-crafted lyrics define her unique style on guitar and piano. She has composed 2,000 songs, each a little gem waiting to be discovered. The songs tell stories and are charged with emotion – you can't help but listen.Back to top
