Apprentice“I got elected to represent Heathrow at the Olympic Village, helping the athletes to check out all their bags in a smooth and efficient operation. I was in a management role and met loads of Olympians and Paralympians, checking out about 700 athletes a day. It was a lot of fun and I can say that I really made a difference.

“But back to the day job, as an apprentice technician I’m in the final year of a four year course which has taken me all over the airport, apart from Terminal 5 which I’m about to go into.

“My first year was based at Kingston College doing a BTec National Cert and NVQ 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and now I’m studying for HNC in electrical/electronics on day release as well as completing my NVQ3/QCF in Engineering Maintenance. I was working in a motor franchise but didn’t see much future ahead.

“Then a couple of friends in this scheme recommended it to me and I haven’t looked back since. It’s brilliant. The guys I work with are really self-motivated and I get to interact with airline staff and loads of different people.

“The variety of work is phenomenal, and we’re constantly getting calls from staff giving you new challenges. The training keeps us up to date with constantly changing technology. I see ex-apprentices in management roles higher up the food chain and that’s where I want to be.”
