Responsible Heathrow case study

It takes a lot of people to run the world’s busiest international airport, 76,500 to be exact!

With over 320 different companies operating at Heathrow there’s always a need for new people from retail assistants, bus drivers and caterers to construction and airline workers.

Employers’ biggest challenge is finding the right people with the right skills and attitude, which is why we created the Heathrow Academy.

The Heathrow Academy provides a unique service for those living close to the airport and seeking work. Support involves pre employment training to develop interview and CV skills, an insight into what it’s like to work at an airport, and an understanding of specific job requirements.

Heathrow Academy graduates boost their chances of securing interviews, and once in work, they receive help in gaining qualifications, along with on-going advice and guidance.

Since its launch in 2004, the Retail Academy has supported 800 people from the local community to secure employment, and 500 to achieve accredited qualifications such as NVQs and apprenticeships. And in just 6 months, Heathrow’s new Construction and Aviation & Logistics Academies have placed almost 100 people in employment.

Heathrow is constantly changing. As it does, the Heathrow Academy will continue to support local residents to access and develop rewarding airport careers.
